Background of the study
This study assesses how translator expertise affects the quality of Efik language interpretations during cultural events. Efik cultural events—such as festivals, traditional ceremonies, and public performances—rely on accurate and culturally sensitive interpretations to convey complex cultural narratives (Inyang, 2023). Translator expertise, encompassing language proficiency, cultural knowledge, and interpretative skill, is crucial for preserving the authenticity of cultural expressions during these events. The study examines interpreter performance by analyzing recorded event sessions, conducting interviews with cultural practitioners and translators, and surveying audience perceptions. It focuses on identifying key factors in translator expertise that lead to successful interpretations and how these factors impact the audience’s understanding and appreciation of Efik cultural heritage. The research aims to establish best practices for translator training and professional development to ensure that cultural events are accurately and effectively communicated to both local and international audiences (Inyang, 2023).

Statement of the problem
Despite the pivotal role of translator expertise in cultural events, inconsistencies in Efik language interpretations persist due to varying levels of translator proficiency and limited specialized training (Inyang, 2023). These discrepancies can result in misinterpretations that undermine the cultural message and affect audience engagement. The lack of standardized evaluation and professional development for translators in cultural settings further exacerbates these issues. This study seeks to identify the impact of translator expertise on interpretation quality and propose methods to enhance training, ensuring that cultural events are communicated with accuracy and cultural fidelity.

Objectives of the study:

To assess the influence of translator expertise on Efik interpretations at cultural events.

To identify key factors contributing to high-quality interpretation.

To recommend improvements in translator training programs.

Research questions:

How does translator expertise affect Efik interpretations in cultural contexts?

What factors are most critical for effective cultural translation?

How can training programs be enhanced to improve translator performance?

Significance of the study
This study is significant as it provides insights into the role of translator expertise in ensuring high-quality Efik interpretations during cultural events, thereby supporting cultural preservation and effective communication. The findings will benefit cultural institutions, translator training programs, and event organizers (Inyang, 2023).

Scope and limitations of the study:
This study is limited to Efik language interpretations at selected cultural events, focusing on interpreter performance and professional development aspects.

Definitions of terms:

Translator expertise: The skill and knowledge level of translators.

Cultural events: Organized activities that showcase cultural traditions.

Interpretation quality: The accuracy and cultural fidelity of translated messages.
